Kitchen Flooring Ideas and Tips

A stone floor will last for generations and acquire the lovely patina of use and age, but it is much colder and noisier than a vinyl or linoleum, and s an unforgiving surface if you are on your feet all day long. Stone and tiled floors create crisp, functional surfaces but are hard on glass or china - breakages are more likely to occur, perhaps more frequently if you have small children. If you have an open-plan kitchen, you may want to define different zones by using contrasting floor materials or different floor heights. If the kitchen is a small area, however, you should use the same material to convey fluidity and unity. Whichever type of flooring you choose, it is always better to get it laid by a professional who can advise on substrate, quantity required and any special finishes or treatments that will extend the life of the floor.

Kitchen Countertops and Back-Splashes

Worktops are probably the hardest-working element of your kitchen, subjected to a daily onslaught of knocks, spills, hot pans, sharp knives and the occasional human being (for who hasn't clambered on to a worktop to change a light bulb or reach the back of cupboards?). Strength and resilience are the greatest priority, but worktops must also be hygienic and easy to wipe clean. The best ones also resist the abrasive effects of scouring and will not absorb the stains from food, vinegar and oil, If possible use one length of worktop, keeping joins and seams to a minimum. This way there will be less of an opportunity for bacteria and dirt to build up in crevices. For similar reasons, sinks should be either flush-fitted or under mounted into the worktop. Select the thickest worktop you can afford. The most common thicknesses are 30mm and 40mm, but a 40mm worktop tends to have greater resistance to heat and damage and is less prone to cracking or warping.

Cooking Appliances That Make a Difference

Cookers
An all-in-one freestanding cooker with four electric hotplates or gas burners on top, and one or two ovens below, is still the most cost-effective cooking appliance on the market. This type of cooker can stand alone or slot in between two base cupboards and is easy and cheap to install. (For a separate built-in oven and hob you may have to rip out your kitchen and start from scratch.) Moreover, you can easily upgrade your freestanding cooker as most come in a standard 60cm width, and will slot smoothly into the space of your old model. If you have limited space, try a smaller 50cm-wide cooker or even a mini table-top version with two rings and an oven. There is now a much wider selection of these 'entry-level' cookers on the market, with hi-tech features and sleek metal finishes to rival the built-in machines - multifunction fan ovens, wok burners, dual fuel models (electric oven, gas hob) and plenty of safety features. Grills are usually set inside the oven, which does restrict your ability to roast and grill at the same time; a separate grill cavity or double oven is a more flexible solution.
