Being married definitely has its benefits. It is one of life's greatest experiences, a sacred journey that many people consider a rite of passage into adulthood. With all that aside, no one said marriage is easy. Although it should not be thought of as job, every couple goes through ups and downs. For those who have not lived together previously or only for a short period of time, it can be difficult to adjust to living with someone else in an independent capacity.

Tying the knot: design tips for newlyweds
From a decorating standpoint, clashing styles and stubborn tempers can be fertile ground for arguments and discontent. For many men, leaving the bachelor pad mentality can be tough, especially for guys who are used to living solo or with male roommates. On the other hand, ladies are also oftentimes unwilling to redesign or rearrange. The main point both parties need to understand is that marriage is all about give and take. The sooner you realize that compromise is the key to household harmony, the happier you will be. Here are a few tips to help get you through that first marriage hurdle.
  • Focus on the big picture: Decorating a house is a big enough challenge as it is, and even more so when working with conflicting styles. Instead of resorting to a divide and conquer approach, divvying up each room, thoroughly discuss with your spouse about the ways you can find a middle ground. It may be hard, but thinking outside the box is one of the best ways to resolve marital conflict.
  • Make a list of the must-haves and have-nots: Jot down your top design priorities and have your spouse do the same. Once done, think of ways to match up what you can. This is a fun way to reach a decorative understanding and will also strengthen your bond. If you like granite countertops and your partner cannot live without stainless steel appliances, than the solution seems pretty clear.
  • Do not be afraid to mix and match: just because your married doesn't mean you need to start out by purchasing all new furniture or performing costly home renovations. Make a style of your own by incorporating elements from both of your styles.
Consider decorating your living space the first challenge of married life. If you can successfully get over this hurdle, you should have no problem going forward!
